The honest price comparison
In South Africa a used engine typically costs a fraction of a new or factory-reconditioned unit. Our own used engines currently run from about R14,000 to R58,500 depending on make and model. A comparable new unit is frequently several times that, before fitting.

When a used engine is the smarter buy
- The vehicle is worth less than the new engine. Spending more on the engine than the car will fetch rarely makes sense.
- You need it running this week. Used stock is on the shelf now.
- The rest of the car is sound. Good body, good gearbox, healthy suspension — a used engine buys years of use.
- It is a work vehicle earning money. Downtime often costs more than the price difference.
When to spend on new
- The vehicle is newer and you intend to keep it for years.
- It is under a finance agreement or fleet policy requiring new parts.
- The engine is rare enough that used units are hard to source.
